On 22 Mar 1885, Sudan, Suakin. Battalion with Royal Marines and Indian Contingent, marched eight miles towards Tamai (?) to build three Zaribas. While still unfinished, were heavily attacked by Arabs of the Hadindowa tribe. After severe fighting enemy were driven off, losing 3000 killed and died of wounds. Battalion lost 21 killed, 33 wounded.

On 24 Mar 1885, Sudan, Near Suakin. Enemy attacked a convoy marching into Zariba - but they repulsed with heavy loss. On 25 March the Battalion escorted an envoy towards Suakin, and back.
