On 22 Jan 1879, South Africa, Kiva Sambele. Advanced as main part of 2nd part of column towards sound of firing. Encountered 1st half of column engaged with enemy in the Valley of the Inyezane River. Took no part in the action, guarding Line of Transports. 'B' company drove off - without rifle fire - enemy advancing on extreme left. Enemy defeated with 300 killed. Own (whole column) casualties, eight killed 16 wounded. Advanced and occupied Inyezane Heights. Bivouacked for night.
