THE ROYAL BERKSHIRE REGIMENT - VOL 1 (1743-1914) This is a facsimile edition of the history written by F Loraine Petre OBE and published by the Regiment in 1925. Petre\'s history of the Royal Berkshire Regiment is a well respected two volume account from the formation of the 49th Regiment up to the period following the First World War. Each original volume can cost up to £150, if a copy can be found. For many people interested in the regiment the information is more important than having a first edition. This volume covers the history of the regiment from the formation of the 49th (Hertfordshire) Regiment and the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment, through their amalgamation in 1881 to form the Berkshire Regiment (Royal from 1885) up to the outbreak of the First World War. BACKGROUND The idea of having a complete history of the Regiment germinated at the annual meeting of the Regimental Dinner Club on 1st June, 1922, when the following resolutions were passed. (A) That , in the opinion of this meeting, it is desirable that a history of the Royal Berkshire Regiment should be compiled, such a history to be divided into two parts : Part 1 - A concise History of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Battalions prior to the Great War. Part 2 - A more detailed History of all the Battalions forming the Royal Berkshire Corps, during the Great War.
